Someone should explain to me why, if English is your primary language...if that's what you speak over half the time, and choose to write in, why write with an accent...why the dialect?

How would you all like to try and read all of my entries if they were in a Southern (American) dialect? Yeah...neither would I. (point of ref: I don't HAVE a Southern accent, but if I did...)

At any rate, I can take writing in accent and dialect from some very well-written short stories, but what the fuck?

Why?
Really...I'm curious

I know plenty of people who don't have English as their first language, yet still manage to write properly. You know it obviously. So, did you learn it phonetically? Could you write in "proper" English if you had to? I'm not trying to be an ass here. I want to know.

I was being the playful smartass earlier, and I apologize. But I have been wanting to ask you. I'm sorry if it came off as me being a jerk...sometimes it's inevitable for me.

I can't speak for Cilian, but I personally find it more entertaining when he writes with his accent. He can write without it. I have experienced this quite a few times in the almost four years I've known him. He obviously prefers to write with it. I harped on him about it when I first met him, too. But, seriously, he's not writing in his LJ for your entertainment. He's writing for his own...and, more importantly, for mine. *broad grin* So if you don't like his accent/conveyed persona, find it annoying to read posts written with the accent, or think it is tedious or hard to understand, then perhaps you should....not read his posts?

See, that is ALL I wanted to know. That he chooses to write with it.
damn.

I read his posts because I do enjoy them...but I have wanted to ask him why he writes like that since the day I first saw his journal.
That's all.

Thank you.

FRANKLY

I really enjoy his entries ;) At least the comments I've read through your journal. I don't know the guy, but obviously he's smart. Maybe it's something patriotic? I think that's admirable. It's interesting, and it's not sporatic. He's dedicated! If he wants to type that way, why not?

Plus, I accidently clicked over to his journal a while ago and read lyrics to the Tom Waits song "chained together for life" which I've never heard, and it's become one of my favorite Waits' songs. I'd never heard the story of Edward Mordake before then.

And if we want to be annoyingly technical here, we Americans are probably more responsible for butchering the "english" language than anyone ;)

boddah, I have no problem with him, as I agree, he's an intelligent, witty fellow. This is why I didn't bring it up for a long time...but by cracky...I couldn't stand it anymore.

I just want to know why.

You're not understanding. I'm not talking about misspelling and little chops at the English language...you should know that, especially as much as I/we make fun of this. I'm talking about CONSTANTLY writing like you speak. Most British people don't type with an accent, they use different slang, but not an accent. Hell, my Spanish-speaking friends don't type with a Spanish accent. Besides this all started on someone else's journal where he kind of pissed me off with a "seemingly" condescending remark.

I'm sorry if I disagree and find it a wee bit pretentious. If he really can't write in English, fine. But I have yet to hear that. I've a hard time believing that when someone types "Bloody Americaes..." they don't know the word really ends in an "n".

You know what, just go read this (http://www.livejournal.com/talkread.bml?journal=masquerader&itemid=39963&view=346139#t346139)

Hey

I'm not being argumentative or anything, I was just saying why I think he's a cool guy. I didn't mean any of those things to be in opposition of anything you've said.

And I do understand, I know what you meant. Sure, most people don't type like they speak without pause, but so what? He does. Of course, I also see where you're coming from. Maybe I'm just reluctant to think that this fellow is condescending, me being a person who often inadvertantly insults people on the internet ;)
I guess my stance begins and ends at "he seems cool to me."

I'm sorry to butt in, I have no place in this conversaion :)

Yeah you are, ya freakin' Libra.

Don't apologize. You're completely entitled to your opinion. If I really wanted a private journal, I'd lock it or keep a paper one...which I do. :)

As long as you don't think that's what I am doing... even if I am legit in being foreign and actually being better at another language.

Oh good. You'd be surprised how many people try to whip out thee "I spell gooder than you"-argument whenever a discussion arises...

Besides, I don't have much ov an accent. I may construct odd sentences though, but that's about all I do that makes my writing resemble my speech.

This post sounds very familiar. Were you the one who mentioned a link to an Irish guy's site, written entirely in an accent? Heh.

The only time I type with a dialect or accent is when I say words such as "hello" or "yes" mostly because saying "hello" to someone when they enter one of the chatrooms seems rather formal to me, and seeing as they're my friends, I don't want to it to sound formal..

I do use words which I don't think are very standard though, loo for instance, but loo is just such a great word :D but if it's something I don't know how it would be spelt (ie, it's only really spoken, not written down) I don't use it..

I can't really understand WHY people would type with an accent, it always comes across to me as they don't know how to use English

loo :D
