Well the way I see it is maybe if I'm missed enough in CA and I miss everyone there enough (which I do) then maybe miraculously this plane ticket will appear in my hands out of nowhere along with enough money to visit both north and south for a few weeks. MAGIC!

She's my baby. Jill mentioned you just got a new kitten. What kind? Name? Is she/he your only one? I've thought about getting another cat but I don't think Cosette would like it too much.
My kitten's name is Filberto! (but you have to say it like a crazy Italian man and roll the 'r')
He is about 14 weeks old and was the largest of a litter of six. Black and white bi-bolored male tuxedo cat with very stinky poop.
I have an 8 year old calico named Emi, who is the reason I ended up getting another cat in the first place. She's so lonely when I'm at work that I felt bad and ended up getting her a little brother. Of course, when I brought her home, she hated him and was really pissed of at me:) She's lived in multi-cat households before and it's been rare when I saw a cat that just really didn't get along with other cats, so I figured that she'd be alright with him after about a week or so. It's been four days and they're almost friends now. At least they can lay and sleep less than a foot away from each other now. Emi was chasing him and hissing and batting at him before if he came within four feet of her.
It took me a long time to make the decision to get another cat, but she was getting very anxious and neurotic and I realized after a while that the only real reason I hadn't gotten another cat was because I was afraid of the added responsibility. I figured that it was my ultimate responsibility to keep my indoor cat as happy as possible and decided that with her age, she would be better off with a kitten-friend.
(I also consulted a pet therapist. Yes, I am a paranoid geek.)
Anyhow, I think, if you want to try another cat with your current one, a kitten won't have the tendancy to try to dominate a much larger and older cat. I picked a boy because as an overall whole, male cats that I've met seem more even keel than females, and I figured that his relative well-adjustedness would balance out her neurotic codependence and I would maybe end up with two loving and sweet cats.
I am thinking about bringing out my kitty from home. Boo is SOOO much nicer when I am home all day. I think he gets bored too. But instead of being all needy, he just gets pissed off that I left him alone. :)
I can picture your little kitties interacting with each other, curled up close but not touching, the older one batting at the kitten. I LOVE CATS! I was never a huge cat person or dog person, but now that I have one I can't help but ooh and ahh whenever someone talks about their own.
My cat seems to be doing okay being on her own, but I still feel neglectful leaving her alone. She's only four years old now, so I may wait until she's older. Plus, as you mentioned, the responsibility thing has me worried (not to mention the added cost of a second cat).
Sometimes, too, I feel as though my heart is going to break because it's filled with so much love for my cat (I know that sounds weird), and I can't imagine there being enough room in there for the love of another cat.
