The only thing I can think of is that he was drunk, or drugged, or in an argument with somebody in the apartment and he was trying to prove a point. There is no excuse good enough.

Other than he's a fucking freak about his public and wanted a "safe" way to show his child. I'm sure in his mind, that was the safest way he could think of.
