Yes, yes.
"Hey Dad! Stop being an alcoholic! Right then, I'm going out for a drink."
I never said I was consistent.
But look, I'm at home, wishing someone would play Literati with me.(Thank you:) Mostly because I don't have many friends here still...or yet. And the few that I do ARE SAPS WITH JOOOOBS. Poor saps. I wish I had a job. Speaking of...

I went to Lawrence today. I don't know what it is about "place" with me. This town, Topeka (lovingly dubbed, Topuka) is completely oppressive. I even feel it in Kansas City. But there's this little pocket of liberalism in the corner of the conservative rectangle that is this state, and that is Lawrence. Sure, it's not "wild and freeee" (fuckin' hippie), but it's the only place I will live and be happy in this godfearin' crapfest of a state, where the sheep raise cattle and wheat. Remember kids, "1 Kansas farmer feeds 128 people + you!" Awwww, shucks.

So yes, I get into Lawrence, all gussied up fer ma inter-view (sorry), and I feel immediately better. Jill must find employment soon. Jill must move to Lawrence soon. There are people there Jill's age and there are things to do that don't include seeing a movie or going out to eat. OMIGOD! Yes, t0tally. I went to my interview. It blew balls, so I sabotaged the typing test. I do not want to work in the office of some cable parts manufacturer with no health insurance benefits. Sorry, I do have some standards. Ah yes, and I threw off some chica who called this morning by declining her offer. She was quite taken aback that I did not want to sit around and call people to tell them about a 90 minute presentation they can attend and receive a 3-day vacation! Gee whiz. I've been on the receiving end of those calls. I'll be damned if I'm going to make them.

ANYWHO, I then drove to this flower shop and handed in my resume for office manager. That would actually be a neat job, methinks. Then I went to Mass. St., parked, walked to City Hall, and filled out an app. for both Administrative Clerk I and II. That would be nice pay with good benefits. Remember kids, I've never been one to believe my job is my career, nor does it identify who I am. It pays the fucking bills is what it does. I am an ARTIST, dammit! ;p

After "taking care of bidness", my sharp-lookin', business-dressed self, walked down Mass. for a bit. I walked over to see if the Chapman's Used and Curious Goods was still there. Alas, it is not. I swear to bloody Christ on a crucifix, that (aside from Wacko in Los Angeles) this was my favorite store ever. It was like a thrift store, only better. It was like a damn CAVE stocked with cool, cheap shit that you could either use for decoration, as something practical, or for ART! I found so many neat things there. Most of the time, you just go in to explore though. It looked like a small store from the front, but then you discover the back rooms. Through one small door, you step into this foyer of old telephones, Ataris, stereos, turntables, and various electronic equipment. I found some neat chemistry bottles and vials on the shelf behind those once. Past that is a large room full of hats, purses, knick-knacks, paintings, and just...STUFF, large stuff. To the left, it keeps going with cool dishes and kitchenware. Then further back were aisles of tons of old junk, cool suitcases, typewriters, toys, etc. all fairly well-organized and the only employee I ever saw was "the Chapman", an old black guy who sat behind the counter up front. The whole back part of the store was really old and had very, very high ceilings and stone walls, like it had been a barn once. I can't even describe that place. I will desperately miss that place. It was, in short, amazing. After crying on the street in front of what used to be the most glorious store ever, I walked back up to Mass. and bought some postcards. I then walked to a coffee shop, got my Black Forest Mocha to go and headed back to my car, happy as a plum. Plums are notoriously happy fruit. They are also notorious for their addictions to smack.

[the part NO ONE will care about]
Lawrence has expanded so much, even since my last visit. It's become more commercial too, as growing American cities do. I was very disappointed to see one block of Mass (given it was at the end) stocked with a Starbucks, Gap, and American Eagle Outfitters. And the whole North side of town has vomited up tracts of cookie-cutter apartment houses, a huge grocery store, Blockbuster, Pizza Hut, and a fucking Applebee's, amid other "easily recognizable" names. Wee. hoo. But, many of the same independent stores are still thriving. So they must be doing something right.[/supreme boring, now on to Boring Light©]

It was a gorgeous mid-50's day out, so I drove back to Topuka with my mocha, window down, music blaring, singing along to every song, whether I liked it or not. I could feel the Vortex of Suck™ as soon as I was within 5 miles of shitty city limits. I then went to my Sister's and talked to her for about an hour before coming home.

Word.
Must...go...out...tomorrow...night. Must...dance...soon.......will........die.
Actually, I think ma Seester and I are going to a movie. :p Ah well, it's something.

I'll play Literati with you in about 20 minutes (10:30 or so) if you're still on.

I believe you should drive to Denver for a weekend and hang out with me! :) That'd be something to do...

P.S. I can't believe they've added a Gap and Starbucks to Mass. How disappointing.

No, you should come here too. I'm just offering up something for you to do to pass the time. :) Flying out gets expensive, it's cheaper to drive - although I understand given your recent big drive why you wouldn't want to.

I'll be out over Memorial Day weekend. Do you think you'll be living in Lawrence by then? Could I stay with you Friday/Saturday and possibly Sunday? If that's too much, let me know. I'll probably take Friday off work and get there early to late evening; the wedding is Saturday evening, and then on Sunday I want to meet my dad for lunch or something. I figure I'll either leave Sunday night or Monday morning. Let me know if this is cool or not. Thanks!

Yes, regardless of your financial situation, you MUST have an apartment in Lawrence by Memorial Day - just so I can stay with you. haha j/k I'll totally understand if you haven't moved by then (please, look at me, a year later and I'm still living with the folks - shoot me now). :P

last time I was in Lawrence (about a year ago) all that commercialized crap was on Mass... which sucks. I'm pretty set on moving there in the fall though, and probably live in Hashinger dorm first year. what's there to do that doesn't involve movies or going to eat? I'd love to know.
I love the side of Mass that has all the cute non-chain shops like Hobbs or Paradise Cafe. Best breakfast ever.. but my sister said it's not as good anymore.

HASH! 6th floor, baby!
I lived in Hash my first year too. It was great. You'll have the best time, that is...if you do actually go to KU. :}

Man, I always hated Paradise Cafe because it reeked of that fish smell every time I went in. I hate the smell of fish. >_<

Well, there's the Bottleneck and Granada. But keep in mind, I've been away for 5 years. These are things that I'm assuming are still constant. I hear there are some great music venues in houses too. Check out this site (http://www.lawrencerock.com). :) Also, the campus is gorgeous and nice to just walk around, go eat at Yellow Sub, sketch in the Natural History museum. It's just a more cultured, young town. Sure, it's not teeming with things to do, just knocking at your door. But if you choose to look, there's usually a few things. Liberty Hall is good for more art house films, tons of coffee shops, cool bookstores.

Hash is probably where I'll be put.. hopefully.
fishy smell.. hrm.

I'll definitely have to check these places out. I always remember the cool bookstores and coffee shops in Lawrence, and the Brit Store! My God I love that store! And there was a nifty tattoo and piercing shop on the same side of Mass, but I think they might have moved since I was there.
