Soooo, this means I can technically say I've exhibited internationally, yes? You don't have to watch it. But I'm damn excited that in the opening shot you can see my Pepsi Mao photo behind my prof (Pok-Chi Lau).

Also, got a letter from Serbin Communications today. Last year I was a finalist in the College Photography contest. This year I've moved up to Honorable Mention. Which means I still get jack, but that's pretty good considering I sent in a sub-par (no really, it was) b/w print. It was so bad (to me) that I even included a note saying I can provide a better one. I know, classy, right? But I ran out of time. At any rate, this is very cool and I hope they don't print that one. :}

Also, got my Mini Moo Cards yesterday and I highly recommend them. When I get more money, I'm going to get more. I'll try and send them out soon, to those who wanted one.
I just can't believe the price and quality. LIKE A DREAM!

Now, for the money-wrangling.

Congrats on the exposure.
Your teacher seems cool and bullshit free: a rare thing amongst fine arts teachers.

thanks!

He has his own special blend of Chinese bullshit. But it's tolerable.

He once told a fellow student that her parents fed her rice, but she did not taste a grain.

That sounds brutal!
-it was criticism, right?

Yes, and delivered with the least amount of tact possible.

I had to stand up for her on that one, among other things. He is not the great communicator sometimes.

eheheh
Well, I have seen some lousy work in my time and believe me, some people needed wooppings that never came so I sometimes took it upon myself to give them. - That did not make me very popular for some reason. =P
On the other hand, some teachers can be pricks just because they feel like it and others simply think that their way is the only way.
I never got along with either kind. I have a tendency to defend my work vigorously if I see no reasonable fault in it.

Artists should be more honest with each other. If you can't take it, don't be an artist. That's one of the problems I have with the town I live in. Everyone's so damn nice because we have to see each other all the time. If I told people what I really think of their shitty painting, I might get spit in my food at a restaurant.

That said, Pok-Chi is kind of an ass. An ass I respect, but still an ass. His actions were uncalled for and we've had many an e-mail debate.
He's also a hustler, which you kind of have to be if you want to get grand things done.

Exaaaaaactly.
We often put our whole being into work and it really can suck when it gets criticized. One has to be strong minded and not get discouraged...
Well, shit, I wish I could apply that to the rest of my life o.O
I got in tiffs with Evergon and I still consider him a mentor.

Yeah, well, the application is a different story.
And I see the influence: http://www.sexmutant.com/images/ramboy.jpg

:)

You have to be able to argue with people, at least I do, otherwise there seems to be a lack of respect/strength there.

He was indeed quite influential but at the same time, It caused me to want to do art in a grandeur well beyond my means: I want to take renaissance aesthetics and narrate the sublime. For example, I have been obsessed with Dante's inferno for as long as I can think of. One of the things I want to do is recreate and photograph the 7 layers of hell. Play with pure symbolism, do video, etc. all kinds of crazy shit.
Did you see my post on Sayat nova?
I could never equal, in my own way, something like that but I want to try.

I could see you pulling that off very, very well. I don't know much about video, but I want to try that soon as well. I might take it this summer.

And no, I didn't...was it long ago?

I have not but I have been trying to find it.
I do not know a whole lot about except that Von Trier is involved in the project.

It's great. Very inspiring. If we all had someone like that to kick us in the butt, there would be much more creativity in the world.

I liked all of it except that stupid vector art shit (as in A Scanner Darkly...and that other movie I can't think of). I don't like "art" that looks like a fucking program made it.
