Goddammit....I love and hate financial aid day. I realize I shouldn't complain about having money, but shit...I do have to pay it back, someday.

I still can't decide between a MacBook Pro and a PC.

MacBook Pro because it's more geared towards what I want to do, probably better quality, and doesn't have fucking Vista. It's also $1700 for refurbished, without Photoshop, word processing, a mouse, and possibly an extended warranty. I could easily drop $2600 if not more.

OR, get a decent PC laptop, force it to swallow XP, buy PS with my educational discount. Clearly this sounds more intelligent...but MacBook pretty.

Crap.

Also, I just bought a lovely black gas mask on eBay...for ARTS <---thanks Jen. That's all I can call it now.

I've been thrown into another task...possibly two. Curating a show in February with the theme of "Exes". It's a Valentine's Day event. Also, I've been nudged into applying for a position on the Lawrence Arts Commission.

Busy, school hasn't even started yet.
TOO MUCH. But good, I think.

Meeting with potential wedding photography client tomorrow.
Must finish two paintings by 25th. Have to re-do screenprint for Darfur benefit. Put together a plan of attack for V-Day show. School starts Thurs. Dinner with Sara on Friday. Kim's staff party on Sunday.
Balls. BALLS I SAY!

Don't buy a mac. You can get a comparable PC for a fifth of the price that will work half as long and then you can just toss it and get a new one.

And use WAREZ. Torrents are your friend.

Yes, but I don't like the notion of e-waste, want something that will last longer. And I'm trying not to use pirated software anymore. The last thing I need is a lawsuit and I think Adobe scans for that shit.

I know, I'm an ass.

If I'm not making any money off of their shit I'm not sure what they can do about getting money out of me. It's not like they've lost anything. Plus, I don't have any money. I'll buy a legit copy when I've learned how to use it.

Computers can be recycled. The thing with Apple, that I've seen, is that at a certain point, your shit becomes obsolete and you're totally fucked. It's not the hardware that gives out, it's the software that starts shitting the bed. Plus, Apple likes to randomly shut programs down on you, and everything you worked on is magically gone - POOF - just like that. I hate it. I don't like working with that.

I haven't seen an installation of a browser other than Safari that isn't buggy on an Apple. Camino, blows goats. Eplorer, not updating anymore. Firefox, same as Camino, of course. They're all buggy.

Apple are proprietary fucks. I do not like having to spend more money just to keep my fucking computer working as it should, but their software goes obsolete too fucking fast, and everything is too goddamned expensive.

No, that's fine. I did the same thing. But I'm using these programs for photos that I either have sold, or will.

And you make some fine, fine points. I've never really taken to the Mac OS either. People say it's supposed to be easier, but they're indoctrinated.
Plus, with the money I save on not buying a Mac, I actually COULD buy legal software. Hrmmm....

Being in school, I've just been surrounded by Macs and it's hard to not buy into that "design standard". Plus, I do know a few people who've had theirs for quite a long time without any real problems. I need to think about it more.

And then there's this....

"An Apple machine will be much simpler to set up and maintain, thanks in large part to Mac OS X's outstanding record of security. It will also include Web, e-mail, photo and music software far superior to the junk on most PCs."

Given, that was taken from a Washington Post article written in 06, still...the security issue is a factor.

True, the Mac is 100% more secure than a PC. But I have a free antivirus program running on my Winblows box, so I don't have to worry about that, either.

The Loco is correct about the warez, though Photoshop CS3 on the Mac is a bitch to pirate. If you don't mind using CS2 then you'll be fine.

When I got my Macbook Pro a little while back, I got a 15% discount for being a student and the normally 250 pound Applecare 3yr warranty was on special offer at 50 pounds. If you have a student card, ask about that at an Apple store and see what happens.

Yeah, the student discount is less than the refurbished discount...unfortunately you can't get both. And I still don't really want to take a chance on getting caught using pirated PS, since I do make money from my work.

I looked at a bunch of PC laptops today. Bluh. Not impressed really. Heavy, clunky, not impressed with the screen resolution. The Sony VAIOs were okay though.
