Starbucks do it to flood out neighbouring coffee places. They open far more than is necessary and most of the shops make a loss: but it's ok, because the cluster as a whole makes money. When the competition is forced to close down, Starbucks close down those shops making the least money - fuck the jobs, the other coffee houses...
When Eric and I were in San Francisco last month, we were walking around in search of coffee. He commented "It's so strange. I haven't seen a single starbucks since we have been here. I guess San Francisco is anti-corporate and perfers their smaller coffee shops."
I laughed my ass off. There was a starbucks right down the street when he said that. I made sure to point out every single one that I saw thereafter....the probably averaged on every few blocks, especially in the central business district.
I should have kept count. I would point at them and say "Hey Eric, what does that sign say? I can't read it from here" and he would tell me to shut up.
