Okay...I might go get this in an hour. Tell me this is okay. :}

9pm: It is absolutely DISGUSTING how much money I just spent. I'm feeling a little sick, but I'm still happy that I bought it. I'm not going to be telling my parents how much I spent. In fact, I won't be telling anyone, most likely. I'm am completely irresponsible and it feels goooooood, if not a little woozy-making. SECOND JOB BABY!
Bad thing about this is, if I take photography soon, which I'll probably have to if I stick with Art as my major, I'll have to buy a decent SLR too. Fuck you, I'm smart.</i

Fuck your thieving dorm-mates. Damn.

It's almost like vinyl vs. CD.

That is exactly how I described it a few weeks ago when this debate came up elsewhere, and I even mentioned it again earlier tonight. There's just more . . . I don't know. Depth to film. Or something. I mean, Disintegration sounds amazing on disc, but wow, you can beat the scratch of vinyl. Feeling. You know? It's the same with pictures for me.

That said, Dax says you're shooting him soon and I honestly can't WAIT to see what that slick-ass camera you have comes up with. I can only imagine . . . I will probably turn eight shades of green.

As for all the rest, yes, yes, and yes. See, if I could afford it, I'd buy a digital just to have. Take pictures at bars and shit. You know? But again, I run into that whole "MUST HAVE THE BEST" thing, so I'm just not bothering. I wouldn't use it except for quickie shots, so why spend the money? But see, I'd want the quickie shots to be good, so I'd HAVE to spend the money.

You see my dilemma, I'm sure.

When Daniel took me out to get the Minolta, I was of course all wooed by the $999 Nikon. Or something. I don't even remember what it was, but it was sweet. Sigh. I was already planning my next camera before I left the store with my starter.

I so need to take a photography class. I'm overwhelmed by everything I don't know, but in true Sia fashion, I'm just sort of jumping in and half-assing it and hoping I come up with something stellar.

Of course, if I ever DO accidentally get that PERFECT shot, it won't matter because I won't know what I did to get there.

It's so overwhelming . . .

Wow, for some reason, I thought you HAD taken a class. Extra kudos to you m'dear. You have talent. :)

It has always been my belief that simply "messing around" is the best way to learn. I always do that first, THEN consult a manual or take a class. Trial and error baby without real pressure. :) Also, as a photographer, and not that I am or anything...though it is something I love...I would say that do not worry about that perfect shot or remembering how you got there. Most good photographers have some amazing shots that were purely luck. I know I do at least. It doesn't mean that all you have to be is lucky to be a good photographer, as you have to have an eye and some skill to get there(which you do). But as long as you have passion, determination, knowledge, and a good sense of aesthetics...you'll do well. And I do believe you have all of those.

You don't need a fancy-schmancy camera to get some really great shots, in fact, it sometimes gets in the way...see, now I am jealous of your $300 Minolta. ;)

Okay...I didn't mean to downplay the "remembering how you got there" bit...because that is important...but you know what I mean.

Aw, damn, now I'm all verklempt. Seriously. Thank you.

Yeah, when Daniel first gave me the camera, I dove in and took all kinds of stuff, but then I just sort of ... petered out. I hate doing anything I'm not good at right off the bat, you know?

But then I snapped those pictures of Dax a few weeks ago, in addition to recent shots of Jackyl and Drag, and it just fired me the fuck up again. I've decided to just do it and trust the fact that eventually, I'll learn my way around the camera. If I accidentally take an amazing shot, yay. You know? I've realized that even if I DO know exactly what I did to create that perfect image, the next time I tried it, I'd probably fall on my ass. So whatever.

It's fun, at any rate. I'm having an absolute ball with it, so we'll see.
