Sep. 1st, 2002 02:42 amThis was nice to walk into as I was going to work today. I thought I was heading into a shoot out what with all of the scattered police cars, yellow tape, and news vans...not to mention a lone bus in the middle of the road and some covered up bodies.

2 Pedestrians Are Killed, 1 Injured by MTA Buses
From a Times Staff Writer
MTA buses struck and killed two pedestrians and injured a third Saturday in two separate incidents in West Los Angeles and Pacoima.
Hannah Maizes, 67, of Century City was killed and an unidentified 62-year-old woman from San Francisco was critically injured when they were struck by a Metropolitan Authority bus at 2:15 p.m.
The Line 28 bus, which runs between downtown and West Los Angeles, was southbound on Century Park West and turning left onto Little Santa Monica Boulevard when it hit the women, Fire Department spokesman Bob Collis said. Police said witnesses told officers that the women were in the crosswalk. An MTA spokesman said that crosswalk does not have a traffic signal. (first of all, when I walked into this, the bus was turning onto Century Park West FROM Little Santa Monica, not the other way around. Also, there are crosswalks on all sides of that street because that's where I cross every weekend. Hannah Maizes was also one of our regular customers at the bookstore.)
The bus driver, a 45-year-old woman, was not arrested.
"Right now, we're treating it as an accident," Los Angeles Police Sgt. Robert Topete said.
The injured pedestrian was taken to UCLA Medical Center.
The second incident occurred about 8:30 p.m. at Laurel Canyon Boulevard and Chatsworth Drive. The MTA bus was traveling about 15 mph south on Laurel Canyon when a pedestrian suddenly jumped off the curb and ran in front of the bus, LAPD Officer Dave Chong said. The man, who was pinned under the bus, was taken to Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, where he was pronounced dead.
"It may be a suicide, but we're not sure," said MTA spokesman Rick Jager.
LAPD detectives were investigating both incidents. Authorities planned to test both drivers for drugs and alcohol.

See...I told you the bus was cool.

other than that, that is incredibly sad. i know the area they are taking about, since it's by century city hospital (a lesser dump) and you are right-there are crosswalks. fucking idiots.
