Dec. 18th, 2001 09:58 pmI don't want to be here.
I don't want to be there.
I want to be somewhere else.
I feel like Cinderella, only, you know, not as pretty.
Finished Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Here is my opinion of it:
"good story, good story, good story, good story, convenient, unbelievable plot twist so that moral can be inserted, end of story."
Man, what a let-down. Not that I hate the book mind you. I was just disappointed. And from what I hear the 2nd-4th are the same way. I will still read them, because they are enjoyable, but damn, why did she have to do that? Unfortunately, I can compare these to Anne Rice and her "Vampire novels". By the time she got to the 4th one, she'd run out of steam, but she kept plowing ahead. Now I just see her name and groan. I hope J.K. Rowling takes some time to hone her writing skills and develop a better, more creative plot rather than getting to the end of writing a book and dropping the ball completely. It was such a lazy, pulled-out-of-her-ass ending. It's a shame that successful authors now have to, well, they don't HAVE to, but they do, listen to marketers and PR people. Quantity for quality baby.

Date: 2001-12-19 12:47 am (UTC):( I was going to go with a bunch of people to see Lord of the Rings, but most theaters are sol out for the evening shows already. We'd have to go see it at Century City or Universal and I'd rather see it at Mann's. Plus, I don't really have the money, so I think I'm just going to wait. Which sucks because two of my co-workers went to a screening last week and said it was phenomenal. Foo.

Date: 2001-12-19 04:26 am (UTC)it is a kid's book you know...
*ducks behind Nej*
For a young adult read, I thought it was great, but thats just me.
:p
Date: 2001-12-19 07:18 am (UTC)I know, but I don't think standards should be lowered just because it's a "kids" book. There are plenty of great young adult/intermediate/children's books out there that don't crap out at the end. (Any of Madeline L'Engle's books to name a few.)
I did like that she doesn't condescend to her young readers though. I also admire anyone who can write for that age. I would end up having a terrible time because I'd keep thinking, "Damn, is this word going to be understood?" or "Crap, should I not curse so much?". Heheh. Seriously, I admire anyone with the skill to write for that age level and write well. I was just disappointed by the convenient ending, that's all. :)
