I got the wooden PASTA spoon, with the little wooden pegs on it. There were always some of the pegs missing and my grandmother would say "They gone because of the naughty little boys like you break them off!" I grew up thinking it was Italian custon to him kids with spoons.
Maybe it is, of sorts. I have several friends who came from Italian-American first or second generation families, and their moms all whacked them with the big pasta spoon.
Ouch. I didn't have to worry about pegs, at least. ;)
My dad stuck to spankings -- when we were Really Really Bad, mom would send my brother or I to dad, to get a spanking. She was more the smack-onna-butt sort, or a slap to the face if we were mouthy, or the High Mistress of Spoon-Fu.
My dad was also the one who seemed to dish out the physical punishment. He'd always throw things at me, like remote controls. He's not a nice guy. He kicked the cats. Moms seem to be better at punishment, all they have to do is say things like "I'm so disappointed in you." Or give you that motherly look of disapproval.
Oh my, my Dad has the best look ever. All he has to do is look at me like that and I stop(ped) dead in my tracks. I think my Mom is the one who whacked me with the paint stick, but Dad just gave me that look. I hope I have that look. It would make punishing children so much easier and safer.
