For 1988-1992 and 2000-2004, I think it could be summed up more specifically as "Arrogant, stupid white men named Bush." Let's hope for better things 2004-2008. If the world hasn't undergone massive nuclear attack by then due to the impending war in Iraq, of course.

It's really nice how Dubya has managed to singlehandedly ruin US foreign policy in two years. And who says the man's an idiot? That's quite a feat! Oh, wait.... Exactly! I was reading Michael Moore's new book and he has a chapter in there that is just a letter to ol' Dubya. He says, I don't know why people think you haven't accomplished anything, look here. And then he lists all of the horrible policies, revoked laws, etc. that Dubya has managed to pass by us. It's really quite disgusting.

*sidenote: let it be known that though I do love Michael Moore, you must read his new book with an objective mind. Like everyone, he has motives as well. Still...I generally agree with him

I like how "offices" are created. It's the one thing that the checks and balances system can do that no other system can. Because the foundation of the government lies in multiple branches, we are able to create new branches that may or may not serve any other purpose than to take the blame for certain fuckups, lessening the blame thrown on the larger government as an entity.

I voted for Nader in the last election. Maybe it's just me, but I don't think there will ever be any real change in this country until there's an independent party with some clout.

I voted for Nader in the last election as well. Here is my reason...

I didn't like Gore.
I didn't like Bush.
I knew nothing about Ralph OR the Green Party.

I wanted to vote. I knew Ralph wouldn't win. But, I also knew that if the Green party got at least 5% of the votes in the election that they would be allowed equal federal funding as the democrats and republicans in the next election. I figured that nothing would be better for anybody than to have more choices at election time. Being able to choose between Coca-Cola, Pepsi-Cola, and RC Cola is a hell of a lot better than only being able to choose between Coke and Pepsi. So, I guess I had a political agenda of my own. But, alas, the Green party only got like 3% of votes or something.

The American people are stupid as a whole (you, me, and blu are exempt). Most never even considered voting for Nader because the newspaper coverage, debates, tv coverage, etc. was all only about Bush vs. Gore. Most people never think outside the lines. That's why country music is so popular in its current ugly state.

I think a lot of idiots were scared of "throwing their vote away". As if the electoral process wasn't based on that. pff.

My whole family laid into my sister when she said she voted for Bush, even my conservative parents. That made me happy. :)

Ok, Jill. I still had this reply to one of my posts in my inbox. I clicked on the link to the original post, and ended up reading everything that you and mrsassypants had to say to each other. All I can say is damn....very interesting reading. Kind of leads up to that point where you mentioned him directly in one of your journal entries later on.

But, one question, is there a website that you know of off the top of your head that has to do with volunteering for polling places? (I know I could easily look it up, but just thinking that maybe you could rattle one off).

I knew Ralph had no chance, but I was rooting for the Green Party to get funding as well. It's pretty scary that they couldn't even get 5%. So much for the American public getting fed up with the status quo.

I voted Gore, because I had always liked him and I had no real hope of a Green winning. I guess I could have voted for Nader since California would obviously vote Gore. But since moving out here, I've noticed quite a bit of rampant conservativism...probably due to the big money the state takes in (the biz) and the fat cats who want to protect their take. So I became too scared of a Bush presidency and voted Gore. Alas...little good that did.

At least Gore has a cool last name. Ironic that his wife ran the PMRC, methinks.

What really stinks is that someone can just barely win a state and still get all of the electoral votes. ?!

To paraphrase Michael Moore, Bush didnt necessarily steal the election as much as Gore lost it. Gore didnt win two key states, states that should have been in his back pocket, his home state of TN and AR. He refused to let Clinton campaign for him in AR which ultimately cost him the election. If Gore had won AR and TN, FL would have been irrelavent.

But Gore is just as bad as Bush, in a quiet way.

Look at this way, like the Reagan era, and like Bush is doing....conservative presidents are good for art!!! The Art World thrives on repression. Look at history. Further, someone like Bush gives all kinds of campaigns a focal point. Labor, environment, human rights etc....all these campaigns are more united than ever because they all have a common enemy.

In a way, it was almost better Bush win.

Gore didn't lose the election. The votes would have come back in his favor, had the re-count continued...to paraphrase Michael Moore.

Did you not read the report a conglomerate of journalists (Washington post, NY Times amongst other national press associations) came out with back in the winter concluding that had the recount been conducted the way democrats wanted it, Gore would have still lost. After the election was said and done, they banded together and worked in FL for about a year, counting votes, factoring in the disenfranchised as well. They spent months on this. Was Michael Moore there? No. Focusing so much on FL is assinine because there are 49 other states.

Bush is the president as legally as can possibly be. The Supreme Court ruled on fairly sound legal precendence, granted its a ultra conservative court, but the system appears to have worked.

EVEN if Baby Bush would have legally won the election, had the count continued....even then, it doesn't fucking matter. There was so much wrong with this whole process. Voters being turned away, ill-equipped and staffed polling facilities, "hard-to-understand" ballots. Fuck chads, that's just dumb. I work the polls every year and it AMAZES me what goes on. We were completely understaffed and ill-equipped last election here in California. It was ridiculous. In a precinct with two polling places, there were two competent individuals, myself and another man, running around like a chicken with it's head cut off. It was amazing, truly amazing...in that "I can't believe this is official" sad kind of way.

as i understand it, state's voting methods most comply with federal outlined mandates. theres not one way to vote, but many the feds approve of.

however the standards are a bit out dated as we know and i believe the fed passed tighter standards since the election but its up to the states to impliment them.

And perhaps this is because they have to be, because I would imagine it's hard to be an older person in this gleaming candy-coated hairball we call Los Angeles, but that's a reason, not an excuse.
